MARCO LUCCIO INTERNATIONAL CITIES - OPENS IN NEW YORK
Written by Mary Tokatlidis – Curator/Assistant
As crowds gathered into the Australian Consulate on the 34 th Floor, the lights of the Empire State and Chrysler Building shone bright through the windows of the gallery space and provided the perfect backdrop complimenting Marco Luccio's images adorning the walls.
The first Thursday of the month is the day most art exhibitions open in New York. Despite so many options in this city, a very strong crowd of interested art lovers braved the cold weather and attended Luccio's first one-person show in Manhattan. In fact, all RSVP invitations available were snapped up - a full house was declared by the Consulate.
It was a great night with music, wine and food accompanying the art. People's response to Luccio's work was thrilling to say the least for the artist. Works such as The Eiffel Tower, The Empire State, The Flatiron and The Chrysler , all received strong interest. The deep lines gauged into a copper plate to create such bold and vibrant drypoints clearly stunned the onlookers in both scale and bravura.
Luccio took time to explain his process from the initial inspiration of working on site, right through to the final technical process of creating the finished drypoint. This allowed the audience to enjoy a new depth and appreciation for the images they were seeing. New Yorkers were excited in seeing their beloved city interpreted through the eyes of an Australian. Having said that, there were quite a few ex-pats there as well lending their support. They loved seeing images of back home as well as their adopted metropolis.
Opening speaker Marilyn Kushner from the New York Historical Society was quite taken with Marco's work and clearly impressed by his vision. She mentioned in her speech to a captivated audience, that his work deserves to be part of the New York world of prints and hopes that many more visits are to come and further work made by Luccio in New York. She described Marco as 'a printmaker's printmaker'. Kushner was clearly impressed by the richness, scale and daring of Luccio's work. These were high accolades indeed from such a highly respected New York authority.
Another highlight of the night was the attendance of Caroline Baumann, Acting Director of the Smithsonian Institution, who came and met Luccio.
For further reading, a review by the President of the New York Society of Etchers, Stephen Fredericks, will be available in an upcoming edition of I MPRINT magazine .
